Are Shih Tzus good with children?

Shih Tzus are bred to be companion animals. They can be an amazing addition to a family with children as long as children are taught how to interact appropriately with their new family pet. Shih Tzus in general are usually lovable, affectionate, energetic creatures. Children usually have a lot of these same traits which makes them very suitable for one another.

On another note, Shih Tzus are classified as a small breed. This puts them at higher risk of injury. It’s important that all family members know how to interact with their new dog. I cannot tell you how many times I accidentally stepped on a paw. It’s a learning experience. I’ve learned to walk very carefully, especially around the puppies.

It’s also essential that you don’t purchase your Shih Tzu puppy before 11/12 weeks of age. I know it’s exciting to get a new puppy, but if you bring them home too long before the critical social development period that takes place during the first 12 weeks of a dogs life your puppy will miss out on essential basic training skills he/she would have learned from his/her mother/ littermates.

I also recommend buying a book on training and implementing the key concepts. Or, you could work with a trainer or enroll your pet in a puppy class after the puppy vaccination series is complete.

All in all, it is important that your child/children and your puppy feel safe and happy when they spend time together. If they learn to respect one another, they are sure to become best friends and develop a lifelong unbreakable bond.🐶❤️🐾
