Shih Tzus and Allergies

Shih Tzus are known to be a hypoallergenic breed. This is one of the reasons we chose Shih Tzus as the dog of choice in our home. Two of my three children are allergic to dogs. But, there is no 💯when it comes to Shih Tzus or any other dog for that matter and allergies. Humans are allergic to the dander that dogs produce not the fur. On another note, Shih Tzus have a hair-like double coat that doesn’t shed too much. As a result, when their hair does fall out it often gets stuck in the double coat. This is helpful when it comes to allergies. Unfortunately the down fall of their beautiful coat is matting. Make sure you’re brushing their hair daily, especially if you keep the hair long! You may want someone without allergies to do the grooming if you’re allergic. Also, bath with a good shampoo and conditioner, but not too often to keep the coat clean but not too dry. Lastly, clean, dust, vacuum often in areas that the dog inhabits to remove any excess dander. One last tip that I learned from my children’s allergy specialist is to make sure to take an antihistamine like Zyzal or Zyrtec half an hour before you go anywhere where there may be animals if you suffer from allergies.🐾🐶
