How to Safely Introduce Two Dogs to Each Other

If you plan on bringing a new puppy or adult dog home and already have a dog at home this is a good read for you! Dogs have their special way of getting to know one another. We as humans must take the necessary steps to help the introduction go smoothly.

Dogs are social creatures and they learn a lot of valuable information by interacting with other dogs. You may observe that they use their noses to learn about one another. Sniffing is a huge part of the investigation process. Often dog introductions are a wonderful match from the start. Other times, time and patience come into play.

The human needs to observe the interaction to make sure things are going well. Pay close attention to body language. The dog’s body should not be tense. Their ears shouldn’t be pinned back. The dogs should look relaxed and curious. If either dog looks anxious or afraid this could be a red flag.

It is common for the greeting to be short. One dog may simply walk away and go about his business after the introduction. Another scenario that may play out is that the dogs may not greet one another at all in the beginning. They may simply not be interested in interacting at the moment.

Some tips for helping the dog introduction go smoothly include the following:

  • Ideally, have the meet and greet take place in an open neutral space so the dogs have room to flee if necessary.
  • You may want to have both dogs on a leash to start.
  • Keep meet-and-greet sessions short.
  • Be cautious with resources such as food and toys until a relationship is established.
  • If possible, know the temperament of both dogs.
  • Make sure your new puppy/dog has a safe place when you’re not able to observe the dogs interacting. A playpen, spare room, or crate works well.
  • Praise positive interactive behaviors.
  • Redirect negative interactions and separate for a while.
  • Have a trainer lined up just in case any issues arise.
  • Join an online dog training program like Baxter & Bella for more tips for success. (https://www.baxterandbella.com/)

My biggest tip for success is to be patient. The getting to know one another process often takes time. Your dogs may become best friends overnight or it may take time for them to acclimate to one another. Either way, be there to patiently facilitate the process and step in when necessary. Hopefully, a lifelong canine friendship will be right around the corner.

Let the Puppy Curriculum Roll

August 23, 2022 By Deanna

The puppies are developing so fast! The puppies’ eyes are starting to open. If you watch closely you can see Blaze’s eyes open for a moment. We are starting week 3 in our Shih Tzu breeding program with the introduction of a potty pad to the Whelping box. Puppies are now eliminating on their own. This usually means that Mom is done cleaning up after the puppies.

I also added a soft toy for novelty exposure. Nobody seems too interested in the toy this morning. They’re all about napping.💤💛🐶 I will also do a brief sound desensitization exercise later today. I’ll add it to my Instagram story/highlight for viewing. Have a wonderful day!

I hope you enjoy the short video clip of the puppies napping below!

Creative Ways to Keep Puppies Busy and Happy

August 19, 2022 By Deanna

A busy puppy is a happy puppy. We all know that puppies can be a handful from time to time. Puppies often suffer from boredom just as we humans do. The difference is that when puppies get bored they usually find something to do. Unfortunately, we may not always be fond of their ways of receiving boredom. Chewing on your end table or tugging on your kitchen curtains are less than ideal-boredom busters.

I hope the list below gives you some great ideas on how to keep your puppy busy in an appropriate and mentally stimulating manner. Check out my Amazon page link below for more ideas on keeping your puppy occupied. (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/31T4PG3CU0ND3/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_4)

Creative ways to keep your puppy busy:

  • A stuffed Kong
  • Puppy puzzles
  • Snuffle Mats
  • Treat dispensers
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Go on a walk
  • Tug of War
  • Play fetch
  • Chew toys
  • A ball pit
  • Teach your dog a trick
  • Frisbee
  • Treat dispensers
  • Obstacle course
  • Lick mats

Shih Tzu Puppy Progress Report

Puppy Update

The Shih Tzu puppies are doing amazing! My daughter helped me complete Early Neurological Stimulation exercises with the puppies this evening. ENS exercises are relatively easy to perform. Early Neurological Stimulation consists of 5 exercises that are performed for 3-5 seconds. It is important to only perform ENS on puppies that are relaxed and experiencing no difficulties adjusting to newborn life.

Early Neurological Stimulation Steps:

  1. Tactile Stimulation (Rub a Q tip between toes.)
  2. Hold head erect.
  3. Hold head facing down.
  4. Supine position.
  5. Thermal Stimulation

Peaches, Sky, and Smokey didn’t protest or complain at all during the Early Neurological Stimulation exercises. Blaze protested a little bit. Sunny didn’t like the exercise at all! It’s interesting to see how differently Shih Tzu puppies from the same litter react! Every puppy has a unique personality that will slowly start to emerge over the next several weeks.

We also completed Early Scent Introduction. ESI exercises help puppies develop a keen sense of smell. Early Scent Introduction not only helps with nose awareness but confidence as well. The scent of the day was coconut.

Early Scent Introduction Scores:

•Sky-positive
•Sunny-neutral
•Smokey-neutral
•Blaze-negative
•Peaches-positive

The puppies all continue to gain weight and are thriving. As they mature more, I will continue to work to help them complete their developmental benchmarks. The end game is well-socialized bulletproof Shih Tzu puppies.

Why Responsible Breeders Weigh Puppies Daily

August 10, 2022 By Deanna

Responsible breeders should weigh puppies daily. Puppies are very fragile for the first few weeks of life. As a responsible Shih Tzu breeder, I want to know if a puppy starts losing weight so I can supplement when necessary. Puppies can go downhill very quickly. Daily weight checks help me track growth as well.

As you can see in the gallery below, the puppies don’t love weight checks. They prefer to be very close to their mother during this period of development. Mom isn’t very fond of me moving her puppies around either right now. As a result, I weigh the puppies in the whelping box right next to Mom. I move as quickly as I can. The goal for the first few weeks of life is to allow puppies and Mom to bond with very little human interference. There is plenty of time for socialization during the appropriate developmental period in the future.

I hope you enjoy the photos! Hopefully, as the puppies mature they will be a little less squirmy and I will be able to capture higher quality images. If you have any questions about purchasing a purebred Shih Tzu puppy from my responsible breeding program please don’t hesitate to reach out to me!

Why Breeders Should Microchip Puppies

Why Breeders Should Microchip Puppies

August 4, 2022 By Deanna

I consider myself a responsible Shih Tzu breeder. All Shih Tzu puppies for sale in my breeding program receive a microchip before they’re sent home. I feel I must do my part in making sure the Shih Tzu puppies are set up for success before leaving my breeding program.

Below are some of the reasons why breeders should microchip puppies before they go to their new homes.

  • Collars break but a microchip is a lifelong internal identification tag.
  • If the puppy ends up in a shelter they can contact the owner.
  • The microchip can prove ownership.
  • A thief is likely to remove a collar but a microchip is thief-proof.
  • The chip is relatively inexpensive.
  • Microchips last up to 25 years.
  • 1 out of every 3 dogs has the probability of becoming lost at some point.

*Make sure to do the following for optimal microchip protection.

  • Make sure to register the chip.
  • Make sure to update your contact information if you move.
  • Ask your vet to scan the chip at visits to make sure it is working properly.
